Mässa is a work by choreographer Erik Valentin Berg where three performers are plunged into a void. Their movements are uncertain and essayistic as the situation grows paranoid and uproarious. The stage makes all the signs visible but not legible. As it dawns on us, something strange has happened to semiotics. The usual conceptions are put out of commission. Any pursuit of contact is a risk of being misinterpreted. The terror implicates everyone involved in an obscure codependency.
Mässa is a piece in the form of a mass. We are preparing ourselves for the revelation of its meaning. Meanwhile we are dedicating our efforts to the habit of communication with unclear expectations, so are also the results of our efforts.
In Mässa Erik Valentin Berg continues his work in search of higher powers. The choreography is developed in close collaboration with the performers Sybrig Dokter and Nadja Voorham, and the music made by Berg under the supervision of Daniel M Karlsson. In times of doubt and uncertainty, it is crucial to have spaces where conflicting emotions are allowed to exist. Where we can gather and mourn our shortcomings, and collectively direct our prayers each separate ways.
